A child-friendly city

Conakry has no large permanent theme park, but it offers a fine range of activities for families: water everywhere, shady gardens, easy excursions and a culture of hospitality in which children are always welcome. The key is to plan your days around the heat — outings in the morning and late afternoon, a cool break during the hottest hours.

Cooling off

Jardin du 2-Octobre AquaparkKaloum

Opened at the end of January 2025, this water complex in the heart of the Jardin du 2-Octobre has four pools: two with slides, a 20-by-20-metre semi-Olympic pool and a 10-by-10-metre paddling pool for toddlers. Changing rooms, a restaurant and a games room complete the site. Very busy at weekends: arrive early.

Fresh air and learning

Masks, traditional dress and objects from Guinea’s main peoples: a short, concrete visit to spark children’s curiosity about the country’s culture, especially for diaspora children discovering their roots.

Play and treats

With children, space and a kitchen make all the difference: Diatigui offers furnished apartments in Conakry, in Kaloum, Camayenne or Kipé, so the family can keep its routines during the stay.

Easy nature outings

For a day out of town, Kassa island in the Îles de Loos is half an hour by boat from Kaloum: gentle beaches, swimming and grilled fish. Insist on life jackets sized for children. On land, the Soumba cascades in Dubréka and the Kilissi falls near Kindia have natural pools where families can swim, ideally at the start of the dry season.

A sample family week

  1. Day 1: a gentle arrival, settling in and a morning walk in the Camayenne botanical garden.
  2. Day 2: a morning at the Aquapark, pizza for lunch, an afternoon nap somewhere cool.
  3. Day 3: a visit to the national museum, then a late afternoon by a hotel pool.
  4. Day 4: a day on the Îles de Loos, with beach time and grilled fish on Kassa.
  5. Day 5: rest, family visits and an afternoon treat at Prima Center.
  6. Day 6: an excursion to the Soumba cascades, swimming in the natural pools.
  7. Day 7: a market visit with a relative to choose a fabric, and a last family dinner.

For diaspora children, these holidays are often a chance to reconnect with the extended family, to hear Soussou, Fula or Malinké spoken, and to taste their grandparents’ cooking. Leave free time in the programme: days spent with relatives, playing with cousins in the courtyard, are often among the strongest memories. A slow pace, with a single big outing per day, also suits the climate well. Younger children may need a few days to adjust to the heat and the time spent outdoors, so keep the first days light and let them set the rhythm. Older children and teenagers often enjoy being given a small role — choosing the day’s outing, ordering at the restaurant in French, or taking the family photos — which helps them feel at home in a city that may be new to them.

Health and comfort for little ones

See your doctor or a travel clinic before leaving, especially about malaria prevention. On site: capped bottled water, sunscreen, hats, mosquito repellent in the evening and regular breaks in the shade. Keep a kit with the children’s usual medicines.

Our practical tips

  • Parks often open late morning and close at sunset: check before setting off.
  • Travel with a trusted driver and suitable child seats if possible; avoid motorbike taxis.
  • Plan cool indoor activities for the hottest hours and rainy days.
  • Guineans adore children: expect plenty of smiles and attention.

Between water slides, century-old kapok trees and island beaches, Conakry gives children memories that last. And often, the best moment is simply time spent together as a family, around a shared meal.
