On 2 October 1958, Guinea proclaimed its independence, a few days after voting "no" in the referendum of 28 September. The date is the country's national day and a public holiday. In 2027, Guinea will celebrate the 69th anniversary of its independence; 2 October falls on a Saturday.
For reference, the 2026 celebrations (68th anniversary) in Conakry began with a wreath-laying at the Place des Martyrs, followed by a large civil, military and paramilitary parade on the Boulevard de la Nation in Kaloum, attended by the head of state, the Prime Minister and his Ivorian and Senegalese counterparts, the Vice President of Sierra Leone, delegations from Liberia and Rwanda and the diplomatic corps. All ten administrative regions, sports teams, cultural groups and air displays took part. The format and venue of the 2027 edition will be announced by the authorities.
For visitors: on parade days, roads are closed in Kaloum and getting around is harder. Invited delegations and visitors who want to attend should stay nearby: a furnished apartment in Kaloum or Camayenne avoids traffic jams on the main roads.
